Nurofen vs Panadol

Ok one last question .. for now...

What do you find most effective and works fastest - Nurofen or panadol - both for children.

I find that the panadol is quicker working but my daughter absolutely refuses to take it and the nurofen seems to take almost and hour to kick in!

Also any tips ong getting her to take the panadol?

Re: Nurofen vs Panadol

Hi there, Blake now has flatly refused to take panadol as he hates the taste as well. So the chemist has recommended Dymadon for pain and fever relief for Babies. He takes this medicine a lot better as it has an orange sweet taste to it. Its also good as it still is colour, sugar, asprin and alcohol free...

Re: Nurofen vs Panadol

They both provide pain relief but they have different actions. Neurofen provides more anti-inflammitory action while panadol will provide general pain relief. Both will reduce a temp, but Panadol is usually quicker to do this.  There are a couple of different flavoured panadol medicines ( there is one my daughter hates but another one she loves!)  as well as a suppository ( especially useful when they are vomiting due to a high temp and can't keep anything down. ) My little one has had a few nasty bouts of tonsilitis, with HUGE temperatures vomiting and pain. I have had to give her panadol suppositories, followed 3 hours later by a dose of Neurofen, then an oral  dose panadol 2 hours later. As each medicattion has a 4 hour minimum before you can give it again, but because they have different actions, you can do this 2 hour alternation for a day( 12 hours)  if the infection is severe and the pain is bad without ill effect. I find Panadol is good for a temp, but Neurofen is better for pain. It is a matter of trial and error and finding what works best for your child.

Re: Nurofen vs Panadol

Nurofen works longer (8 hours) and both my kids take it no problem (they like the taste).

Panadol is ok, but I can't get my kids to take it (due to the taste).

Both are effective. One doctor told me to give both of them to my boy every four hours (eg a panadol, then four hours later a neurofen, then four hours later a panadol).  This was when my boy was very sick with a painful ear infection and needed the fever reduction and pain releif.

So I keep both in the fridge, but I favour the neurofen.

Re: Nurofen vs Panadol

You've used brand names here and that throws a spanner in the works. I know Panadol for kids is paracetamol, but most Nurofen products are ibuprofen, so I need to ask, is Nurofen for kids paracetamol or ibuprofen? They are different drugs and they work differently, and thus it does make a difference.

There are other brands of both of these drugs, I'm just not sure how many produce a kids version. It wouldn't hurt to ask at a chemist if there are other brands or flavours of paracetamol that is suitable for your kids to take. They most likely just don't like the flavour, so if you can find a different tasting version of the same stuff it might solve all your problems.
