May sound a bit caveman and not good etiquette, but my son started getting the hang of it by dad and him going out in the backyard and having races, sword fights, and all of that manly kind of stuff. He kind of bypassed the potty for the big people toilet there after....

Big fun rewards.  We used a big box of 'treasures' - he could pick one when he sucessfully went to the toilet.  It contained chocolates, lollipops, party blowers, bubble mix, toy cars and flavoured straws etc.  He would almost always pick party blowers!

Also talk to him about why he is reluctant.  My boy went to the toilet at kindy, but not at home.  He eventually told me the toilet at home was too big and he was scared of falling in. We reassured him his toilet seat would stop him falling in.

He is dry throughout the day, wears nappies at night (usually saves his poo up until he is put in the night-time nappy).

If he is not ready, it is ok to wait. It will eventually happen.

  1.  have potties in a few rooms - close at hand
  2. if outdoors, let him have no nappy on, he can have accidents and far easier for you to clean up
  3. let him watch mommy and daddy go to the toilet
  4. try not to make it too stressful for him

 oh yeah, and...

5.  put him on a potty every hr for practice.
6.  if it's all too much for him, take a break for a few weeks.
7.  if he is in daycare - have them do potty training also.
8.  start to have him wear undies rather than nappies

Hi Dear Mum,

Put 1 ping-pong ball into the toilet.  Try and get his Dad/Grandad/Uncle/brother etc to encourage your son to join them when they are going for a "pee" to see who can "hit" the ping-pong ball first.  Don't worry if your son doesn't show any interest at first but he will be curious  especially if the male adults come out laughing  saying "I hit the ping-pong ball".  Have you got a small plastic box/step, so your son can climb up to the loo with your help?

You haven't said whether your son sits on the potty?  I also sat my kids on their potty after each meal & normally they would have a poo.

My eldest son was 15 years old before he was finally "dry" at night & we had tried all kinds of treatment.

Don't let your son sence or see your anxiety, just carry on doing something (as if you don't care) but keep your eye on him.  How about saying Mummy's got to go for a pee now when your in the middle of playing/reading activities & he'll soon wonder out to see what you are doing.

Good Luck to you,

Krys x

When you are home have him aim at some ping pong balls in the bowl, when out have him pee on a tree if possible and explain that he has to sit on the toilet at other peoples homes until they can get a stool or he grows taller.
