Is Feminine Washes safe?

Hi again...  its me the pregnant walking UTI and thrush mintier

Thanks for those that have replied to my previous questions. The thrush is still annoying me and i dont see my doctor til next week. I want to just double check with him before i try the 6 day canestin cream yous have suggested. I did try the yoghurt but it seemed messy and im not sure if i smeared it on right... lol... was i suppose to put it around the outside only or can i put a bit on the inside?

My new question for now is, do you think it is ok to use the feminine washes you see in supermarkets to clean down there to wash a bit of the thrush away to ease the itching a bit? Oh and if we used a condom for now, will that prevent us from reinfecting each other... lol...

Re: Is Feminine Washes safe?

As a type 1 diabetic I am very familiar with thrush. The best thing I have found is a combination on canestin cream (for the immediate external itch) and a natural product tablet called Acidophilus (for the internal imbalance). It's the ingredient in yoghurt which helps to maintain the healthy balance of bacteria in your stomach. When this balance is out of whack it can cause thrush. Avoid eating over salty or sweet foods also which I have found make it worse.

Keeping your vagina clean and dry is also good as a moist environment helps the thrush to thrive. Naturally there has to be some moisture there and the cream will add to that but what I'm on about is sweat. Natural fiber underwear eg cotton, which breaths and non restructive clothing all helps.

It is also worth considering other causes for you problems. I found out that I was suffering from thrush every time I got my period. It turned out that it wasn't thrush at all but in fact an allergy to the plastics used in sanitary napkins (this went for condoms too). Once I changed to cloth, washable napkins I was completely "thrush" free.

And finally, when the itch gets really bad, I find a simple ice cube rubbed on the area can give instant relief.

I hope this has been helpful. I know how annoying and embarrassing it can be. Good luck.

Re: Is Feminine Washes safe?

I used the Canesten cream when pregnant on my doctors recommendation, and the chemist also said it was fine to use when pregnant. Yoghurt can make it worse if you are putting it down there, but it can help if you eat it. It will only help if the reason for your thrush is a bacterial one, and you can't know that for sure but I'd give it a go. Or try those yakult drinks. Don't use the feminine washes, don't douche. Getting rid of the discharge won't get rid of the itch. And using a condom might help somewhat to reduce the risk of you reinfecting each other, but the actual lovemaking can make it a lot worse. Its kind of like scratching a mosquito bite- if you leave it alone the itch goes away, if you keep scratching it it gets worse!

Re: Is Feminine Washes safe?

hie l also had a terrible thrush when l was pregnant  but after using the 6nights canesten and washing with  plain water  twice a day it just diappeared. one nurse told me chemicals from soap can also contribute to prolonged cure, plain water is the best it worked for me

Absolutely no douching while pregnant.  Definately use canestin for the thrush.  I had thrush just before i delivered and used the 1 or 3 day course but that was at the suggestion of my Dr.  Definately able to use the 7 day course.  Plus it comes with a cream to use externally that will take care of the horrible itch and pain associated with thrush.

not sure if they are safe.  But save your money.  A VERY mild soap and water will do the job.  Vagina's are self cleaning. Avoid harsh soaps as they will make the thrush worse.

Re: Is Feminine Washes safe?

you must NOT clean inside of yourself.  Douching is the right word, but you MUST NOT DO IT! google it, im sitting here reading a pregnancy book, and right there it says do not douche. the canesten is fine. its what i have used the the past pregnancys, you shouldnt use anything without MEDICAL advise, a pharmasist will tell you what thrush stuff to use too. Dont risk your baby douching yourself or using supermarket things. good luck,

Hi Blue raven-I am a registered nurse, a 4 year Bachelors degree, from a top 10 ranked university in the USA and I can tell you, you don't need to clean your vagina with anything other than water.  And absolutely do not douche while pregnant and  not while you have thrush

your vagina shouldnt smell unless there is a problem, you should not use soaps or anything fragranced on your vagina, YES you should clean it but you dont need to use soap.

Re: Is Feminine Washes safe?

thrush is not caused by poor hygiene! its is more often then not that the person is using things like scented soap or douches that change the balance, mucus helps to clean the vagina naturally its there for a reason.

thrush can be caused by a change in the body such as pregnancy, antibiotics, poor immune system or diabetes its not caused by poor hygiene.

sorry but its annoying me that you keep on about thrush being from not washing properly because thats totally not the case.

Re: Is Feminine Washes safe?

just get the canasten cream! its an antifungal and lots of pregnant women get thrush, talk to the chemist about the thrush and the fact your pregnant and they will give you the right one.

yoghurt is for eating lol i EAT it to stop me getting thrush i wouldnt bother using anything but totally natrual yoghurt on my lower half as its full of sugar and preservative when bought at the shops.

womens washes wont "wash it away" it will probably make it worse and those things CAUSE thrush because they are fragranced and change the balance. use water when washing yourself dont even use soap its not good for you.

GO TO THE CHEMIST

Re: Is Feminine Washes safe?

NO

You're better off sticking with the yoghurt.  Go to the pharmacy and they can tell you whether or not a drug is safe to take during pregnancy, they get rated A, B, C etc and I think Canestan 6 day is rated A which is completly safe.  The feminine washes will just aggrevate everything and may cause another infection.
