Getting a tooth pulled out, need some advice

I went to the dentist yesterday hoping to get a tooth pulled out or get root canal, but an xray has stated that neither of these are options as its just too yuck, and that I need actual surgery to remove the tooth (a lesson learned... DON'T put off the dentist).

Problem is, I'm breastfeeding a 4 mth old bub and wondering if the anaesthetic will harm her. I have the choice to be awake with just a local anaesthetic (but been told I would probably rather forget about the surgery... yuck), have a 'twilight' anaesthetic (be a bit out of it but awake) or a general.

Can I still breastfeed bub? Anyone else been through surgery while breastfeeding? Thanks for any advice.

i had to have surgery after i had my daughter. i fed her while i was waiting to go in and i had prepared a bottle for her to have next feed. all you need to do is express the one feed you would normally give her which will then release the anaesthetic that is in the breast milk.

good luck, i hope it all goes well.

i recently had my wisdoms out and they gave me a local and a valium to calm me down and they said it was fine for breastfeeding, its more long term usage of those drugs that do harm. maybe just call the dentist and ask, they should know.

Re: Getting a tooth pulled out, need some advice

I found this info for you -

General anesthesia should not affect breastfeeding. You can safely nurse once you are awake and alert enough to hold your baby. By that time, the amount of medication in your bloodstream is low enough that the amounts in your milk would not be significant. The point at which you wake up after general anesthesia is the point where enough of the drug has left your system that it no longer has an effect. In addition, pediatric surgeries require anesthesia - and that is a more serious exposure than through mom's milk. Mom might want to nurse just before the procedure in case she's out for a while or too groggy to function normally for a bit. See the articles and references below for more detailed information

i found this from http://www.kellymom.com/health/illness/mom-surgery.html

Thanks heaps for that!  I feel a lot better about it now. I never thought about pediatric surgeries using anaesthetic.
