Re: What do they do?

They will sit the child in the chair, put some protective glasses on & look in their mouth, counting their teeth. They shouldn't need to use the probe unless your child has suspect spots or areas on thier teeth.

You can take them together for an exam, just take them separately if either needs treatment!

The main thing is, do not tell them 'it won't hurt' as that will just make them think it will...try at home, ask them to open wide & then count their teeth. I wouldn't worry too much unless/until they need something done. If that happens I am happy to try & answer any questions you have, as I am dental nurse.

Re: What do they do?

Thankyou for your response yes have been a little worried because she has lost her three front and bottom baby teeth which seems alot for a just six year old and her new teeth are straight but look quite jagged at the bottom of the tooth like a wavey line rather than a straight line. We have osteoporosis in the family and our body's don't take in the calcium even though we eat alot of dairy because of a vitamin d difencency that is me and my mum she may not have this but you do worry about their teeth and absolutely everything. I will be counting their teeth to get them use to it before their appointment  good idea hopefully I may get you thankyou for your help.

Re: What do they do?

Hey...

No worries, you are welcome. At six she will start to lose teeth & new adult permanent teeth will relplace them.

Bare in mind when the others are through that they are adult sized teeth in a child's mouth, so they will be out of alignment for some time. It is hard to tell how much crowding she will have or not, at this stage as she is still growing & has heaps still to do.

IMO it is all the more important you get her seen soonest, especially in light of the whole calcium thing. Dr may or may not recommend fluoride to help strengthen them.

Hope all goes well!

Re: What do they do?

when my daughter was 2 1/2 she fell flat on her face and pushed her front tooth up and back. i rushed her to the dentist after the hop gave her the all clear, and they were great. if their a bit anxious they go through all the equipment and tell them what its used for, let them have a feel of it and wont be forceful with them. when we left she got given 3 or 4 stickers and a new tooth brush. i have been back a couple of times since then and they have alsways been great with her. try going to a dentist that is primarily for kids. good

Re: What do they do?

Hello Mand, I wish I could give you an experience but my little one is still a baby so I'm sure others have great experiences to share with you.

Just a thought but have you considered going to a dentist, discussing what to expect (because I hear some dentists are different) so you have some piece of mind?

When I was younger they were very good with me. They would show me educational videos, take out a big toy pair of teeth and show me how to brush properly etc

Maybe ask for a check up so you can have a think about what happens before anything actually takes place :-)

I know going to the dentist can be scary (jeez I'm almost 23 and still scared of dentists I'm yet to go back for another filling lol)

Good luck!

Re: What do they do?

Thankyou yes will give them a call and find out some info.

All I can remember from a kid is laying back in the chair the little mirror and the hook that might have been when i was older and getting somthink at the end but after josierm story I kind of remember the sunnies great idea.

Dentists cost a far bit if you have to have somthink done when your an adult I'll go one day!!

Re: What do they do?

i took my Charlotte and Lachlan to the dentist just before they turned 4 (lachlan had a grey tooth that I was concerned about).  The dentist gave them "cool" sunnies to wear under the bright light and had a look at their teeth.  they got a clean, no scraping, no pain, no tears, no fear! and a new toothbrush at the end.  I agree not to feel anxious about this because the kids will pick up on it.  Make it sound fun and exciting and something different, not scary!  we made a big deal about seeing the dentist as being a good thing- it really helps (this works with all sorts- dr's, hospital, optometrist).  Tell your kids that the dentist wants to see how well they have been looking after their teeth and how WHITE they are because they have been doing such a good job- its an opportunity to show off!!

have fun.  they will be fine.

Re: What do they do?

Yes I'm a little anxious only about the hook thing I used to not look forward to that. I wouldnt tell them anythink nagetive I believe in encourageing posivtive experiences as you do to. Thankyou for telling me what they do I can now tell them through my daughters homework we will make a book called (going to the dentist) for my three year old and six year old we love making books together. They are great with going to the doctors they lift their top up open their mouth ect its fear of the unknown for them. They have seen silly shows on tv before with kids being scarred of the dentist.  We have borrowed a dentist book but its a little negative I left those bits out. We have even borrowed a book on having a hair cut that worked to. Yes will be telling them how he wants to see their lovely white teeth good idea. Might also say to the girls they can have a star we use stars for posivtive behaviour, being kind and learning five stars they get a prize.

Re: What do they do?

You sound like you've got it under control! The general media is bad for creating fear of things like the dentist, but a book and stars are great ideas.  Dentist experiences for kids tend to be very gentle compared to what you may have experienced as an adult- they don't want to scare them off too young, LOL

Re: What do they do?

I had four wisdom teeth out over two years at twenty and braces as a thirteen year old and sometimes they left loose bits of metal in my mouth which I felt when I got home but cant complain the orthodontist did it for free to be nice he was a nice man he did my sisters for free to. Sounds like your children were ok that's good to know I'm sure they will be fine telling everyone how they went to the dentist and got to sit in the big chair.

Re: What do they do?

I haven't been to the dentist in a while either.  But I would reccomend phoning the receptionist and telling her your girl is a little anxious and ask what generally happens and if there is anything you can do to prepare her.

There are also some books you could buy. Ie. story books that explain gerally what happens.

Most importantly, be confident yourself.  Don't let her pick up on your anxiety.

Re: What do they do?

Yes will give them a ring and tell them its their first time at the dentist. I am confident when it comes to doing things with my girls just like to gather information first so Im passing on the right info to my girls with no hidden suprises yes books are great I'll be making one with my girls before we go. Thankyou Mel might have to book to go one day to all I can think is lots of money I think I leave it with me till I have pain then I'll worry!
