Need HELP

I have a nearly 4 week old baby about 2 weeks ago she started to vomit after every meal and the doctors said it might be an reaction to dairy in the formula so she has been on soy formula for 4 days now abit better of improvement in her nature (she has kinda stopped crying) but she is still throwing up just not after every feed! so now it might be reflux aswell. i'm needing some pointers to deal with everything cause i'm kinda going crazy and very over doing clothes washing.

Re: Need HELP

Ok, it sounds to me more like an overfilling problem.  Yeah, I've had it too and still get caught out by it (8 months on).

The best way to prevent your baby from filling up with wind, which is what is causing this, is to burp her regularly during a feed.  That is, break the feed down into 3-4 sections, where after giving a certain amount, you stop and burp etc etc etc.

The best burping method I have come across that has the best results is to have bubs over the shoulder with you sitting in a chair and leaning back.  By leaning back, you are helping bubs to put pressure on their belly, which means it is going to be much easier for you to burp them (less time and force).

There is a very good reason why babies stuff themselves rotten.  As they are drinking, their tummies fill up, but the 'I'm full' message doesn't make it to the brain in time, so they keep drinking away until they feel full.  That means they have consumed as much 1/3 again what their little bellies can hold, and that has to go somewhere, usually back the way it went in.

Just a word of warning though, you are still going to want to have plenty of towels in easy reach when burping and feeding, because the problem isn't going to be solved over night.

Re: Need HELP

My son was a vomity baby.  Both my twins had reflux.  Some things that might cause vomiting in babies include: overfeeding- especially in formula fed babies (I have seen this before in the baby ward that I sometime work in as a nurse)- you could try giving smaller volumes more frequently and see if this helps., pyloric stenosis where the sphincter muscle in the stomach doesn't work properly resulting in frequent projectile vomiting, reflux (as has already been said- have a look at the advice on the links.  sometimes medication is required such as omeprazole, mylanta etc, and/or AR formula) and less commonly a reaction to one of the components found in formula, but has already been said, this usually causes diarrhoea as well.  In matters of this nature, I would be more inclined to see a child health nurse rather than a dr, as they tend to be more experienced and more helpful in offering advice.  You need to make sure she is having good weight gain anyway, so you can get this done at the same time with a child health nurse.  make sure you plot her weight on the percentile graph chart because vomity babies are at higher risk of failure to thrive.  I wish you all the best.  having an unsettled baby (and all the extra washing) can be a nightmare.  good luck.

Re: Need HELP

Same with me. I have a little boy and everytime he would have a feed it would be everywhere. So we put him on a thickened formula and it has helped alot. He has Karicare AR thickened formula and I fully recommend it.

Re: Need HELP

This happened with us but found out baby was lactose intolerant. But usually get runny poo too if that's the case. It could be as simple as she's throwing back up the food she doesn't need/want as could be a bit much for her. But you know the symptoms better than I do so can only guess.

Re: Need HELP

My son had the same problem and we changed formula so much and were finally on the most expensive one out there and finally his doctor gave me some liquid Zantac and that stopped it all.  He had acid refulx and was only a few months old.  I would definately talk to your doctor about trying something along those lines.  It made a world of difference for me.
