When are you going to take your childs training off their bike?

Or when did you take your child's training wheels off ? I know its personal choice but I wished I took my six year old training wheels off at four because she had a smaller bike now that bike she hits her knees and more to the point it is now my three year olds. We take her up the oval and a long path and needs lots of help and  positive encouragement. At least my three year old will be watching my six year old and we will start her earlier.

Re: When are you going to take your childs training off their bike?

Aidan never had training wheels on his bikes. He got his first bike when he was not quite 3 and he'd sit on it and put his feet on the ground and "ride" it like he did his little ride-on car. After a while he just put his feet up on the pedals once he got the feel for it and off he went.

Training wheels are not good for teaching kids balance as they rely on them too heavily and they also rely on them to keep them balanced when the bike is motionless instead of putting their feet down. Better to let them learn to ride the bike without them, but they MUST be able to firmly put their feet on the ground.

Never thought of that then they are learning from the start slowely getting their blance.

I suppose they come with training wheels so we use them but yes you have to take them away she has rely on hers quite a lot I dont think she can put all of her foot flat probably the front bit of her foot I'll have a look at the seat if it goes down any more. Thankyou.

Re: When are you going to take your childs training off their bike?

I think the answer will be when they are ready.

My son who is 3 1/2  got his first BMX for Chirstmas so he still has his training wheels. Before he got the BMX he had a 3 wheeler bike that even today he prefers to ride. When you think they are ready take one training wheel off and see how they keep their balance. If they are doing well take the other one off.

The way i learnt to ride was the boy that lived next door decided one day that he would teach me to ride his bike so he took me to the biggest hill in our street and just pushed me from the top and just let me go. I wouldn't recomend this as it took a long time for the grazes to heal that i got from falling off at high speeds. LOL.

Hope this helps

Re: When are you going to take your child's training off their bike?

She asked to have them off but because you need to turn in the back garden she would fall off we can only practice else were once she gets their she'll be riding round the garden.

I bet for a few seconds it would have been pretty exciting when you where going down that hill until you realised you were going to crash thats a great story. I might start taking her after school each day thankyou for your help.

Confidence also plays a big part.  My son is 5 and still has trainer wheels on.  I am thinking of buying one of those glide to ride bikes..  It teaches balance without the pedals.  It doesn't have trainer wheels at all.  Maybe you could investigate one of those.

Last time we took her she lost confidence quickly she is scarred of hurting herself but with saying that when going to the play ground she can hang upside down without fear swing extremely high and just lately we have helped her go down the pole at school which she thinks is fantastic. Yes Ive heard of those bikes let me know how you go. Thankyou for your help.

Re: When are you going to take your childs training off their bike?

When I take her I might take the training wheels with me and offer one for support if she is having trouble geee three my daughter is six my husband said I have left it to late I think you just become comfortable in knowing that they can ride round the back garden with no dramas. Thankyou for helping me.

Re: When are you going to take your childs training off their bike?

It all depends on how good their balance is. On average, so Im told, boys will be ahead of girls as they are usually earlier at physical skills like balance. However, my DD1 is a tomboy, so I can only tell you about her.

She learned very quicly to use her bike with training wheels at around her 3rd birthday, having mastered her 2 wheel scooter at about 2 years 9 months. About 2 months before her 4th birthday she was up the park and befriended a 5 year old who was being taught by her long-suffering dad to ride without training wheels. The girl decided to give my DD1 a try on her bike, and her dad thoughtfully took over. Afterwards he commented to me that my DD1 was ahead of his DD and she'd been practising for a few days/week already (and was a year older). However, I was 7 months pregnant and wasnt ready to start teaching her! So a year later we went for it on holiday and she cracked it in a morning. She was beginning to hit her knees on that bike so once she was good at it we moved her up to the next bike.

And yes, I have a feeling my 2 year old will not be far behind her sister as she is already using the 3 wheel scooter and her tricycle scarily well!

Hope that helps!

Re: When are you going to take your childs training off their bike?

Thankyou for your response my daughters bike is rather big and cant ride it at home learning only up the oval wow your daughter did well at three my girls also have two very different personalities which contribute to things my eldest is a bit of a worrier when trying new things but will  then give things a go and my youngest just jumps in. My girls like their scooters to they have three wheeled Dora ones one broke though bit of a worry so we will probably buy them the two wheeled ones for their birthdays or Christmas they don't cost much but our children just get so much these days and I like them to wait to  then they  appreciate it more. Would like to hear when your twp year old gives it a go I check your blogs thanks again.

Re: When are you going to take your childs training off their bike?

I suspect the main constraint on my 2 year old will be whether her legs reach LOL! And when DH gets around to fitting the baby wheels back on of course!!! I'll try to Blog it, but it wont be til the summer as she's so much shorter than big sister at the same age. DD1 learnt to balance the three wheeler on two wheels on holiday and so when she tried the two wheeler after hols she could do it (but not before). Just a suggestion for the two wheel scooters - you could try Freecycle or the local Tip? I paid a pound or two for mine from the latter, and I look on scooters/bikes as "exercise" not just toys, so I make them more welcome. But I know what you mean about having so much....

Re: When are you going to take your childs training off their bike?

Yes I agree scooters are exercise the one that broke can probably be fixed with I long screw it was the plastic caps which hold it together but with a long screw and bolts either end they wont come off just one of those things you don't get round to doing when they take turns on the scooter. I will still buy the other ones because when I start back to work they will probably be a bit funny about sharing their toys with other children more so their bikes I have alot of toys because I keep alot from my childhood and as soon as I finished school I nannied for families and later FDC. I also get given alot of toys from my family I should start up my own toy library haha. I think my youngest is a little smaller than her sister was thats good you get to hand down the clothes to.
