Pregnancy and acid indigestion

I'm really struggling with acid indigestion at the moment, only a few times has it got really bad and progressed to acid reflux so I'm lucky there. At the moment EVERYTHING I drink causes acid indigestion.....water, cordial, lemonade, ice tea, obviously juice is the worst one. I was wondering besides my "best friend" Gaviscon, if anyone had any ideas, hints or suggestions. When I had my youngest I ended up having to go on medication for acid reflux but I really don't want to go there this time if I can help it. Oh and for those that don't know I'm 25 weeks pregnant.

Amanda

Re: Pregnancy and acid indigestion

I had really bad acid reflux...truthfully, the only thing that worked for me was giving birth...LOL!  I tried so many things...nadda!  Once I had my baby, acid reflux became a dim memory.

Re: Pregnancy and acid indigestion

There are a  host of reflux meds that you can take while pregnant. Have you let you OB know about this, they can RX something for you.

You can also elevate you bed at night. You can either sleep with a few pillows under your head or I know some who have gone as far as to put cinder block bricks under both head posts of their bed and that has worked.

You can also stay away from the trigger foods like spicy stuff, tomatoes, caffine, chocolate. Everyone's triggars are different but those seem to be the most prevalaint.

Hi Amanda,

I suffered really bad when i was pregnant with Josh and the only think that helped besides quickease was warm tap water. I know it sounds strange and i'm not sure how i ended up drinking it but it really worked. You just sip the water and it worked straight away.

Hope this helps

Re: Pregnancy and acid indigestion

For me, it got so much better when I completely cut out black tea and anything spicy. It would sometimes affect me the whole day, so I just steered clear of those things. Oh yes, and mylanta.

Re: Pregnancy and acid indigestion

agree with Arna- MILK! i still suffer from this, although it was much worse during pregnancy.  Most nights i will drink a glass of milk before bed.

Also avoid soft drink, juices, foods high in saturated fats (sausages are the worst for me), spicey foods and highly processed foods.

Try to sleep upright with your belly tilted to one side to keep the babies off your stomach.  don't lay down after eating.

i lived on mylanta too.

MILK!!!!!  Pure and simple.  Full cream milk at that, as the low fat stuff doesn't have the same effect.  You can't drink to much milk when you are pregnant.

The only antacids I can use are Rennie.  They come in a red package and are spearmint flavoured.  They also come in bulk (48) which is what we go through in about a fortnight! lol.  They are different to alot of products out there because they don't contain aluminium, which is actually an acid producing substance when it mixes with stomach acid.

Iced water can help too, or ice cubes.  I lived on them through all my pregnancies! lol.

Re: Pregnancy and acid indigestion

Milk does help but it's so hard cause I get pretty thirsty and milk doesn't quench my thirst as much as what water would. I get acid everytime I drink so it's just so frustrating.  Gaviscon does work wonderfully but I'm just about drinking that too LOL.

Re: Pregnancy and acid indigestion

Just a thought, and it might be nothing, but do you drink water with food, or separately?  I recall once being told to drink no less than 30 minutes before a meal or no less than 2 hours after (not easy, obviously, when you are eating frequently).  This is so that it does not dilute your stomach acid, which is trying to digest the food.

I have no idea if this has any effect on indigestion.
