Question for the Aussies

Hi all,

I have a friend in the lovely "US of A" who's husband is running a globe trekking theme at a camp for primary school children (including his own) to educate them on the cultures of other countries. She's asked me if you we could give some ideas for 100% Aussie snacks (besides Vegemite), fun things, games, crafts and fun facts appropriate for elementary/primary school aged kids. He's already found out about Henely on Todd over in Alice Springs, and would like some more ideas.

I'm not so good at this stuff - half the Aussie stuff I tend to forget lol, so thought I'd ask you lovely peoples for HELP!!! lol

And damper!  Buried in the coals of the campfire, to cook while the billy boils.

Some of the poems of Henry Lawson or Banjo Patterson could be good too (The Man from Snowy River, The Loaded Dog).  The whole larrikin personality.

They could learn to play gumleaves (no idea how to do that)

Re: Question for the Aussies

We love our Weet-bix for breakfast, Aeroplane Jelly for snacks and of course fruit and kangaroo for tea not really I would not eat (skippy the bush kangaroo) old tv show I have been told it tastes nice though. Alot of us like bbq in the summer and roasts in the winter.

When we are at school we learn Aboriginal history about the dream time. Which may include the boomerang, didgeridoo, and many different Australian animals.

Oh as mentioned the Anzac biscuit which is the 25 of april remembering those whose have died. Anzac biscuits are made from quick cooking oats (porridge) honey or golden syrip up to you butter and sugar and flour very yummy dont last long all gone in a day.

Re: Question for the Aussies

I have put those recipes including a sponge recipe on my blog for today for you. I havent changed the maths to American as ants invaded by cupboard where my recipe folders are. I have a translation in it. Really sorry about that. The little buggers are in the walls of this house!!!!!! I also put a few more ideas as well. I forgot to mention that AFL stands for Australian Football League. it's played with an oval football, no padding and lots of cute looking guys running around in tight shorts and taking "marks" and scoring "goals". It's the national winter sport and cricket is the national summer sport. I don't think much of it unless I'm on the beach playing the laymans version. It's long and boring, I only put it on if I need a sleep!! LOL. Some matches last 3 days or more. I hope this helps the kids learn more about us and our culture.

Can not forget to talk about the Australian Drover which  was the back bone of Australia, is a dying art but still happening today.

.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drover_(Australian) have put a link here which might help.

Plus how  they  pitched camp of an evening and boiled the Billy over an open fire  to make a cuppa tea the old days it used to be with Billy Tea also.

Re: Question for the Aussies

Tim tams!!!! Specially when you bite off the corners and suck coffee up them and then shove them in your mouth before they fall apart. Not really for children but beautiful. Aussie rules football, Just look up AFL, also cricket and rugby are fav over here. There are some great dreamtime stories and Aboriginal art such as dot painting ( it depicts maps and places of food and water and shelter). There are great pikkies of rock paintings. Oh and a book called possum magic I can't think of the author but its very Aussie. You could make lammingtons. It's sponge cake squares dipped in a chocolate sauce and rolled in coconut. I'll blog the chocolate sauce recipe for you. Also blog a pavolva reciepe all though the New Zealanders reckon it's theirs!!! We're happy to share with our cuzs (cousins). We also have a great array of wildlife. I hope this helps.

Re: Question for the Aussies

I just googled Possum Magic it's author is Mem Fox and is available on Amazon.com . It's fantastic childrens book, that every primary school aged kid has read. A good movie is storm boy. It's a book as well by the author Colin Thiele (since passed) It was filmed on the Coorong in South Australia. It was filmed in the 70's. The scenery is amazing and the story is fantastic. Lots wild life too. It's also primary aged appropiate. I'm not sure where you could get that but Amazon may have it.
