help for a full time Grandparent

My hubby and I have just become carers for our 15 M grandson and have both custody and guardianship of him. Whack that on top of two daughters with special needs and life is getting fairly interesting.

I have managed to get him into home daycare and have applied for assistance through Centrelink but  they say I am not entilted to much because we both work.  I was under the impression that I would get 100% back because he was a grandchild. The social worker has been great but is not able t help much.

I have also gone down to 46 hours p/f from 80 so I can look after all the kids so 100% would be a real help right now.

Does anbody know what I should be getting??

Any help would be reatly appreciated

Hi Grandmother,

What a load you have to bear, but I'm sure you don't begrudge a second of your time, or a grain of your love. It would certainly be a shock to my system if I was given those responsibilities for a 15 mth old baby -nappies; daycare, toilet training, and you are still manageing to escape to work part-time. How are the girls coping with the changes in the household?

I can't help with your question I'm afraid, but the advice you were given re carers payments for the girls is spot on. I would get in touch with the Dept of Community Services, or families or whatever they have in your state, and see if there is any he;p available there.

All the best,

Jacqui.

If I am not mistaken, you should be getting carers payment for your 2 as well as they should be getting disability payment. I am not sure what you should be getting for your grandson tho

Wow! I really admire you! You must be so busy. I can only begin to imagine how much you must be doing, cooking, cleaning, washing ect.....

In my opion you should be entitled to 100%, and i have worked as a family sicologist, so i have dealed with many cases such as this. Are you living in Australia? Becuase rules and regulations are different aroudn the world.

Say calm and best of luck, know that you are not alone, develope routines and goodluck!

Re: help for a full time Grandparent

Thankyou so much Nicci.

Yes, I am Western Australia and Centrelink say that I can't have 100% becaus we earn to much. We wil be lucky to make the $71000 make this year even with both of us workng. That may sound alot but take tax out and it isn't that much really.

We are lucky that our routine is fairly set because miss 4 has Aspergers and miss 5 is high functioning Austistic with an aquired brain injury and they can't handle it if things are just not right.

Mind you, i had  forgotten what it was like to get up  to a crying baby and then go to work on 3 hours sleep .
