Well, we are well and truly on our way to becoming self suffcient. We have a bit of land to build on and have planned a lovely little home. Little... yes, so now I have to work out exactly how much we can take with us and what will have to be sold or left behind. Less is more! I think that is the saying. We won't be without anything when we move, solar power, water tanks, veg garden and fruit orchard... are all in the works. We will even have a toilet (which will hopefully be made into a bio loo a few years down the track!). We are planning to move by December, even if the place isn't finished. I could live in a caravan on the land right now, but hubby thinks I will miss all the mod cons. And then again it is just the end of winter where we are, so it is a bit wet and miserable. I can't wait for all the space and freedom! But of course it all means I am doubly busy. Home educating, caring for 4 children, looking after the house and garden, tending hubby (he must be kept well fed at all times LOL) and now planning, building and moving. You would think I would be utterly exhausted, but I am the happiest I have ever been. Our dream is slowly coming true and it is so exciting. I am so glad we are able to do this while the children are young, so they can experience this lifestyle as they grow older. And it is going to be one amazing experience!

Homeschooling the boys

I think I was just allowing him to go to kindy to keep my parents happy (they don't agree with homeschooling) and that wasn't making me happy.

Well, last week was Daniels last week of kindy. I am now homeschooling all of my children. I think I was just allowing him to go to kindy to keep my parents happy (they don't agree with homeschooling) and that wasn't making me happy. Anyway, Daniel arriving at kindy on Monday morning and giving his teacher a hug and a kiss, and telling her how much he loves her and that I am a nasty mummy, made me realise that I should be doing what I believe is the right thing to do. Not what my parents want me to do. So he had his last day on Wednesday, said his farewells... So now we are incorparating a 'kindy' day into our homeschooling routine. Monday will be 'kindy' day. A day of paint, playdough, colours, alphabet, counting etc... Which at the moment also includes cooking and gardening, as I am ultra busy cooking produce from the garden and getting seeds and garden beds ready for planting. Amber is excited about having a 'lazy' day. Thats what she thinks of kindy day, but she will still be learning lots, even if she doesn't realise it. Life is the biggest lesson of all in this world! I much prefer to be teaching my children that lesson, than sending them off to strangers. So this week we are learning about nutrition and all the foods we should eat and which ones we should limit, and the benefits of a healthy diet. Which is a good subject as I can incorporate maths, reading, cooking, gardening, english, science, health studies, phys ed etc into one lesson. Hopefully it will stop raining long enough for us to take a walk!

Time for me to start sowing beans, peas, tomatoes, zucchini, rockmelons, pumpkins, cucumbers... The list goes on. We will all be busy seeding, watering, weeding, planting... Amber is particularly excited. She is a member of the Little Diggers Club, and received a packet of seeds in the mail. She will be planting peas in a couple of weeks and tending them as they grow. Now I just have to find some space in our little back garden among all the other vegies that need planting for the spring/summer growing season. But I guess that is the fun of back yard gardening! The lawn needs mowing but it is being ignored, as the weeds have tried to take over the onions and need to be removed. The turnips are ready to be picked and the tamarillos are slowly ripening. Waiting for the pepinos to ripen is driving us mad. They are the size of a rockmelon and still refusing to go yellow! I want to have a go at making pepino jam, I think it will make a very interesting condiment. The children are keeping their strawberry garden beds weed free, but it isn't the right time of year for fruit. Although they still check for fruit every day. They are kept busy every day checking for eggs (we have a chook who has a taste for egg), playing in the sand pit and dodging the rain. O what fun to be a child!

We have been able to grow enough onions, garlic and pumpkins to last us a year. So now we are moving on to potatoes! We have to plant 45 (!) seed potatoes to keep us fed for only 4 months and so we have enough potatoes to seed for the next four months. Of course this is if everything goes to plan and all 45 seed potatoes give us a good crop of potatoes. But it's good practice and the children are looking forward to planting the potatoes on the weekend. We built the garden bed last weekend out of rocks strewn about the property, and will be adding the soil and seed potatoes on Sunday. The children had fun picking up the little rocks and looking under the larger ones that hubby lifted with his crow bar and sack trolley. After an afternoon of carrying rocks and wheelbarrow rides we were all thoroughly exhausted! Which was just fantastic!

He's Rockin' and a Rollin'!

It's funny coz a couple of days after I last blogged Nathaniel decided to start rolling. He only goes from his back to front, but it's a start! And at 5 months old he is getting very interested in what we are eating and it looks as though it may be time to start solids. But he has a slight sniffle at the moment so that won't be happening for a week or two. I got mastitis again! It's the fifth time in the last five months! So I have been plodding along and the garden is going to need a serious weed next week. I just haven't had the time or energy to get out there. But the house is clean, the children clothed and fed, and hubby is happy so I guess I haven't done too bad.

The rooster has started to crow, so we are giving him a week to shut up... and if he doesn't ... well lets just say we will have one lonely bantam chicken. If the rooster has to go then we may think about putting the bantam chicken in with our layers. And the chickens have started to lay again. We are only getting one egg a day, but it is a start. We could have fed them 'laying pellets' to make them lay but we figured if it must be natures way of giving the poor things a rest.

It's wet and cold and the children have insisted on having the cats indoors. I don't mind too much. The cats tend to sit under the clothes airers in front of the fireplace, so they don't get in the way at all. And I vacuum every second day or so, because of my asthma, so their hair loss is kept under control. The children just love to sit beside the cats and read, so it's nice and peaceful... well most of the time. LOL!

We've been busy the past few weeks, so I haven't had much time to myself. But that doesn't bother me. The garden is managing to look after itself with all the rain we have been having. I just have to duck out between showers to do a spot of weeding every now and then, and to pick vegies for meals. The chickens have stopped laying because of the cool weather and short days. Ambers rooster hasn't started crowing yet, we think that is mainly because of the cool weather and it hasn't got any competition. I need to go to the library and get some books on chickens so Amber and I can research breeding of chickens. We will need to design a pen, laying boxes etc, for when we move to our new place. We have been busy chopping firewood and burning off all the branches etc that are left behind. Makes the place less of a fire hazard during the summer months. My aunt and two cousins are visiting from Scotland. It's cheaper for them to come at this time of year, even though at the moment it is warmer in Scotland than what it is here in the south of Western Australia. They are visiting for 7 weeks which is just fantastic. Amber has been busy with swimming lessons, dance classes and drama classes. She has a performance on Thursday and all the family is looking forward to it. For me, I am going to a piano recital on Friday night with my brother. It only goes for an hour or so, but hubby says I deserve a break. What a sweetie! But maybe he is feeling a little guilty for going to the movies with his mate and watching Terminator 4! The boys have been keeping me busy. Controlling what Daniel eats can be quite difficult some days, but if he eats the wrong things then his gut goes haywire or his behaviour gets out of control. I might have to start homeschooling him sooner than next year, as when he goes to kindy I lose a little of that control over what he eats. Generally they are quite good, but if someone brings in cake it's not really fair for them to say no to him. Jacob is trying really hard to talk and be understood. He is miles ahead than what Daniel was at 2, so I am really proud, but sometimes the constant babble can give everyone a headache. He he!!! Nathaniel swivels around on his back when he has time on the floor, but hates his belly and doesn't seem keen on rolling. But he is nearly sitting up all by himself. I'm not too worried, Daniel wasn't much of a belly crawler either. Hubby has the next couple of days off, he needs a rest and we need to catch up on a few things as a family. Hopefully I will find some time to get on more often! We'll see!!!

My daughters silkie bantams are looking so cute! We finally hit the jackpot and got a chicken! So we have one of each and until the rooster starts to make himself known (crowing at all hours!) we have two extremely cute, white, fluffy bantams in the backyard. I designed and banged together a little run for them on the weekend, as hubbys 'temporary' run blew to pieces in the first puff of wind. He helped me stretch the wire on and make a little gate, that he then screwed on to the run. (The gate is so Amber can get in and out.) So I guess we both had a hand in making the run in the end! I have a tray full of strawberry runners that need planting this week, I just have to find somewhere that I can plant them. We are running out of room. But the more plants that go in, the more strawberries that can be harvested. We also have to find time to go and pick up some raspberry canes from my grandparents. Berries are such fun, and the children not only love to pick them but eat them too! Hubby dug up our three potato plants with the children on the weekend. There were enough potatoes for one meal! But thats ok, next year we should be in a position where we can plant enough potatoes to last us the entire year. The children enjoyed digging through the dirt and pulling out spuds. And then eating them for dinner! A great way to get children to eat vegetables is to involve them in the entire process. Even if it is just buying them from the supermarket, it's fun weighing them up and packing them into a bag. Then preparing them to be eaten! At the moment broccoli and cauliflower are the favourite vegies, so I am glad I have a few planted in the backyard!

So I have been extra busy keeping the fire going to warm the house, dodging out inbetween showers to tend to the garden, cooking warm winter food, keeping a close eye on our chicken run and hoping it won't flood again this year! As well as cleaning the house, schooling my children, going out (to keep sane!), planning the future and getting my hands dirty with all the odd jobs around the house (hubby has been away at work so it is down to me to be the 'handyman' of the house!).It's been fun searching the local salvage yard, tip shop and second hand stores for items that may come in handy for when we finally become as self sufficient as possible! Which is becoming more possible as the months fly by. Hubby is particularly looking forward to no longer working for 'the man' and spending more time with the wifey (me) and all the children. We were hoping everything to be in place within 12 months but it looks as though it may be more like 18 months... but we really don't mind, we are just happy to be working together as a family, for a common goal! So for the time being it's board games, reading books, art and craft, letter writing and cooking activities unless the weather fines up and then we make a dash for the fresh air!

He was playing monsters with his little friend Hayley, and I think by the end of the game she was a little fed up with 'Monster Daniel'. Luckily it was only a morning session and she didn't have to put up with an entire day of monsters. Amber and I were busy all day in the garden. The boys enjoyed being outdoors all day. The weather was lovely so I also got a heap of washing done at the same time. So Amber and I watered, weeded, picked beans, beets and capsicums, fed the chickens some green scraps and gave the vegie garden a nice feed (with Seasol). Jacob did a lot of digging, mainly in the wrong place at the wrong time. But he had fun. And when Daniel got home he fed the chickens some weeds that he had picked out of the path around the house. He also checked the eggs, but our chickens have gone on strike for the time being. Today will be another day in the garden, but we will be sowing seed and harvesting some of Ambers baby carrots. But I am waiting for it to warm up a little bit because at the moment it is freezing cold outside and nice and toasty in here!

I have two eggplants that are nearly ready to pick, but I think I will be cooking them up for hubby and I. The children were not keen on the last one at all. But I will keep trying. Can't stop introducing new foods just because they knock back one.

My grandads memorial is on Friday. Amber has written a poem that she wants to read out. It is going to be in my grandparents garden, family and friends, surrounded by all the trees and vegetable garden that he planted. I helped my granny weed the vegie patch yesterday as she wanted the garden to look all neat and tidy. The children got filthy digging in the dirt and running around the garden. My granny said it was just as my grandad would have wanted it, his great grand children laughing and having fun in his garden.

Hubby and I have been busy planning for the future. A fantastic opportunity has come our way... and after a lot of thought we have decided to accept. I have always dreamed of living the simple life, being truly self sufficient, being debt free and hubby not having to work full time. But we knew that it wouldn't happen until the children had all left home or we retired! We are so happy. We are both so excited, I wish I had someone I could talk to about it all, but my parents wouldn't agree in a million years and I don't want to upset them at the moment coz we have had a death in the family. And my best friend has problems of her own at the moment... But if it all goes ahead, hubby and I will be living our dream by next year and I will be homeschooling all four of our lovely children. I just can't wait!

The garden got a bit of a spruce up yesterday. Weeded, manured and some seedlings planted. Amber planted some cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli under the supervision of hubby. I potted up a heap of aloe vera plants and lemon scented geraniums that I will sell at a local market next weekend. And then I put our Lily Pillies into bigger pots. They needed some extra room for their growing roots. Our garlic has started sprouting and we have to watch the boys very carefully when they are helping us weed as the sprouts look like blades of grass. It's hard to keep the children indoors these days!

Tomorrow we will be planting some broccoli seeds (thankyou SIL), lettuce and onions. By the time they are nice little seedlings the garden beds should be all nicely fertilised with the trailer load of cow manure we got just a week or two ago. The boys will be helping dig in the manure and planting the seeds. And we have beans that need picking. The boys can help with that too, as the plant is covered in caterpillars and I bet they will want to make some pocket money by collecting the caterpillars and feeding them to the chickens. Then I have to sort through Ambers garden and find some beetroots that are ready to be picked. She has a mixture of white and red beets. The white ones are easy to hide in soups and pasta dishes as they just look like pieces of potato. And the red ones are delicious all grated up and added to salads or put in sandwiches. Hubby and I also have to make a little run for the bantams. We were going to do without until one of the cats got a bit too close for comfort today. So the chicken run is on the top of the list of things to do. We are also going to go bargain hunting at the local tip shop. I love rummaging through everything and finding something that can be useful in our garden.

The children all had a ball visiting their cousins on Friday, totally exhausted, but that meant they slept well last night. Daniel keeps talking about 'Emily', but I think he has mixed up two of his cousins names to get a completely new one. So we have no idea who he is really talking about. But whoever it is he says he had a great time playing with them.

I'm actually glad the rain is here, the garden needed a watering and I just haven't had the time in the past two days. The plants were all getting a little thirsty. I got my first eggplant yesterday, I cooked it up in a pasta dish and served it to the children. Of course Amber had to declare to one and all that the eggplant we had picked that morning was now in their dinner and that she hates eggplant. (She had never tried it before last night!) And then she did a big theatrical sigh and said 'But I will eat it, for I am a good little girl and will eat anything mummy cooks for me.' Well thats the first I've heard of that! Daniel loved the fact that we had picked it that morning and he was eating it for dinner. And Jacob has such a big appetite at the moment that he eats anything put in front of him.

Well they are outside again and are letting their little bantams have a run about the garden. From what I can see though, it looks like the bantams are being blown about the backyard! I did say it was a windy day. And now they are screaming, for all the neighbourhood to hear, about the rainbow they have spotted in the sky. Well... we don't have children to enjoy the peace and quiet, now do we? That wouldn't be any fun at all!

I've been busy making beeswax candles the past two days. I buy beeswax sheets and wick and then make roll up candles. The beeswax burns a lot cleaner than store bought candles and they smell a lot nicer. Amber is going to have a go today. They can be her little candles, as you have to roll them quite tight and evenly for them to burn nicely. But once she gets the hang of it we'll be able to use her candles for light as well. I am looking for a candlebra now to light our dining table for mealtimes. I haven't seen any for years, so I might have to go to a speciality store or something.

Made some rhubarb jam last night. Thought I would try just using lemon juice, instead of adding a whole lemon and it didn't set properly. But thats ok, means next time I will add more juice and maybe add some lemon peel that I can pull out once it is cooked. It's a learning process that hubby is happy to be a part of as he gets to eat all the yummy rejects!

Amber has been busy in her little garden. Her basil and beetroot are all ready to be eaten. Shame she doesn't really like either. But I am sure I can cook something up to 'hide' them in. Her baby carrots still have a little way to go, but her flowers have finally started flowering and she has taken some lovely photos of them for her garden diary that she keeps.

The boys have been 'planting' their own little garden in their sandpit. They got into the chickens wheat and now the sandpit has a lovely green grass growing all over it. The boys are very proud of themselves, but I don't think hubby was too happy about having wheat spilt all over the shed floor! At least the boys are happy and out in the fresh air.

Flannel!

We went out to my parents yesterday afternoon to pick some chestnuts up from under their two trees. It took the children a couple of goes to figure out how not to be prickled by the outer casings, but they soon got the hang of it. We now have a huge basketful of chestnuts that hubby and I will have to shell. But first they need to spend a little time in sunshine, it helps when peeling them. And then hubby cuts a cross in the base of them, and we boil them for five minutes and then peel them together. It takes a while to get them done but it is worth it. They are quite tasty and Daniel just loves them. He is the nut lover of the family. I will be using the chestnuts in casseroles, to replace potatoes, until our own crop of potatoes are ready. And why should I buy potatoes when I can get chestnuts for free?! I've also heard that you can preserve chestnuts, but I will have to do some more research on that, as I am not quite sure how you would do it. My parents eat chestnuts like popcorn, rolled in some melted butter and lightly salted. We haven't tried that yet, I am trying to lose some weight and I don't think getting hooked on that buttery treat will do me so good! My grandparents orange tree is sagging under the weight of fruit it is yielding this year. The oranges are still green, but it is good to know that some fruit is on it's way and there will be enough to feed everyone and make tons of marmalade. I will have to find some more recipes to use up all the excess oranges. I don't like to see food wasted, especially lovely homegrown produce!

Amber has two new silky chicks that she is caring for. So far we have only ever had roosters, and I have told her that if she wants hens, then she will have to buy a mature chicken so that we can tell what sex it is when we buy it. But I think she is enjoying the 12 weeks or so she has to rear the chicks before they start crowing and need to be buried. It is a shame, but noone wants roosters, they all want hens. They are adorable little fluff balls, but can't be out of their hutch unless Amber is there to watch them, as one of our cats has taken a fancy for them. Hubby is going to make a moveable run for them, so that way they can get the sunshine they need, they won't be in any danger of being eaten and we can fertilise the lawn at the same time! So many things to do and so little time. At least we can't complain of ever being bored.

Hi, it's good to be back. I have been so busy that I just haven't had the time to come and visit Minti. I had my fourth in February, a lovely little boy. He weighed 4kg and we came home the day he was born. I desperately wanted to be in my own bed and surrounded by my family. As usual I got mastitis, even though I did all I could to prevent getting it! So for the first 5 weeks of bub being home I have been extremely tired and sore, but thankfully it is all cleared up now and I can finally start getting things done around the house. I was keeping up with all the housework and looking after the chilldren, but I couldn't get anything else done. I was just so tired! So I have rearranged the childrens bedrooms and figured out how to fit the cot into our room. Having a three bedroom house and five children, means we have to be very organised in where everyones belongings and toys go. And I think I have got it all under control for the time being. Now I am focusing on the garden. Hubby has a week off in a couple of days so we are going to be busy spending time together as a family and getting some gardening done. I pulled out all the old tomato plants this morning and did a quick weed of the back vegie garden beds. I have a space for where I will be planting our next lot of onions and garlic, and I will have to keep a closer eye on our broccoli as I found them covered in caterpillars this morning. I pay the children 10 cents for each cabbage moth that they catch, but now I think I will have to add 10 cents for every 10 caterpillars they can find! Our new water tank is half full of water already and hubby is buying a tap fitting this afternoon so that I can get water out easily. We are thinking of getting a second smaller tank to feed the washing machine during Winter. Anything to save water... and reduce the calcium build-up in our kettle and washing machine. Hubby built me a small glass house so I can raise our vegies from seed, but I haven't had any time as of yet to get anything planted! Fingers-crossed that I can get some of that done this week!

Well only three weeks to go if I am lucky and on time! Bub has had his or her head down and ready for a few weeks now, and what with the back ache and braxton hicks (which I have never had before) life is a little tiring. Inbetween the headaches and swollen ankles though... it has been quite an enjoyable pregnancy. Which is a little surprising. The children are starting to get excited as they cross off the days on the calendar, but I have warned them it is just an estimate of the baby's arrival. All I want to do is stay home and put up my feet but with three other children that just isn't going to happen. They would be bored out of their minds. My friend who is due two weeks after me is sure she is going to have hers early. She has had a heap of problems throughout her pregnancy, and even though she says her baby is quite small she has convinced herself it is going to be early. It would be funny if she were to have her baby before me!

It is supposed to be a stinker of a day today, so I have put a few bottles of water in the fridge and will be getting Jacob to have his nap this morning instead of after lunch. Hopefully it doesn't get too unbearable, being 35 weeks pregnant I really feel the heat! The garden needs dampening down before it gets too hot and I have to check and make sure the chooks and cats all have enough water. I was going to cook today but it looks as though that will have to wait till it starts to cool down this evening. Amber is coming home today and I'm really looking forward to it. I miss her heaps when she is gone. It's like the family isn't complete or something. I guess I should tell her stuff like that, but I find it hard to express myself and my views to my family. Even friends! I guess I'm just so used to keeping everything bottled up. It was just easier when I was growing up to keep things to myself. I am more of a listener than a talker. Although hubby probably disagrees, he says I talk too much! He he! But then again I feel complete when I am with hubby, and I guess that is what love is all about.

Amber is off visiting some friends with her Nanna today. SD's mum loves being involved in Ambers life and has been there constantly even when SD has been totally hopeless. Funny thing is she never tells SD when she has Amber coz she says he would just rock up at her house and ruin her 'alone' time with her granddaughter. It's good to know that people other than myself can see how spoilt and rude Amber can be when her dad is around. So today I only have the boys and the house already seems a little too empty.

I am looking at getting a telescope, and saw one advertised in a local store, so I may go and have a look at that today. Amber has a few books on astronomy and space, so I am pretty sure she would find it interesting to watch the night skies. And when we go camping we could take it along with us. I used to be really into it all when I was younger (maybe it was all the Star Trek I watched!) and would love finding all the stars and planets. I've been trying to remember all the things I was interested in when I was Ambers age, only thing I remember about that age is living on a hobby farm and being able to run free. I had a fantastic cubbby (an old cow shed) in a paddock and could stay in there all day. I remember kicking and screaming all the way to the bus stop to go to school, and sitting on the edge of my seat all the way home. We had a horse that hated us all, and I would tease him by riding my bike up and down his fence and he would chase me, the only exercise he really got! We had two cows that followed all us kids around like pet dogs and a huge chook pen that I would sit in for hours waiting to watch an egg being laid. I even faked being sick one day so I could stay home from school and watch my cat give birth (I was only 6!). My mum was not impressed when I ran into the middle of her Tupperware party and yelled at the top of my voice how disgusting it had all been and that the cat had even eaten the afterbirth. I collected the tails of the rabbits that our cats caught (yes extremely gross!) and boy did my parents go mental when they found the 'collection' in my bottom drawer! I remember climbing out of my window, which faced the orchard, stealing fruit and hoarding it in my room. The huge vegetable garden that my mum and dad grew and eventually was the undoing of our 'farm' life. We moved out around about the time I was 8 into town, it was my worst nightmare. I remember the hell I gave my parents for removing me from my paradise, but now I am older and know that my dad (who lost a knee cap in a car accident when I was born) just couldn't have worked a hobby farm anymore due to arthritis! But as a child you don't understand why your dad (who is the strongest man in the world) can't live 'your' dream anymore. And I want that 'dream' for my children so much, as does my hubby. So I find it a little hard to suggest hobbies or activities to Amber. But I am getting better at it and learning a thing or two at the same time! So maybe a telescope is a step in the right direction.
