Are you ready? I know you just can't wait to know 6 random quirky things about me.

1. I know kung fu. Well not kung fu, but I studied American Kenpo Karate for a couple of years. I was supposed to test for my brown belt until Izzy had Matthew and all time slowed to a stop. I also studied Traditional Tae Kwon Do and a little bit of jujitsu and Escrima. BTW before you ask, yes Izzy studied Kenpo too, and yes I have the pics of the abuse, though I do wish I had a picture when she gave me a bloody nose.

2. I am completely incapable of keeping my car clean. I think at this point it is genetic. Give me less than one week and you can't see the floor. Of course Izzy says this is not limited to the car, but has slowly over time migrated to my office, the garage and if she didn't put a stop to it the bedroom as well.

3. It can take me less than one minute to frustrate someone to the point of pulling their hair out, screaming, or resorting to physical violence. Its a gift, but I have learned to abuse, I mean use it wisely. BTW, my record for irritating Izzy is on the order of 30 secs, but I am proud that my son can do it in half the time. He is definitely daddy's little boy.

4. I can read a 400 page book in less than 3 hours. I have read many of my favorite books around 30-50 times.

5. I am great at directions. I know the exact locations of all exits and bathrooms in any store, mall, or building even if it is the first time I am entering. I am a long time sufferer of IBS so knowing bathroom locations is VERY important. The directions part came from growing up in North Carolina in the US, where roads will go N, S, E, and W without taking a u-turn or going back the way you came.

6. I will spontaneously start up or continue a conversation with the same person that was interrupted or carried on anywhere from 2 days to 2 months ago. This actually really confuses people at first when I do it. To be honest, I usually am unaware I am doing it. It really frustrated Izzy when we first got married, now she is used to it, or she just ignores me when she doesn't have a clue what I am talking about, which can be frequent.

Ok, now I tag angbob, julielf, cheleinkal, mummycristlyn, katiepiatt, and michellei. You don't have to do anything with this, but it would be fun.

And yes that is a true story that Izzy taught Matty the F-word. I thought you guys would like to know about some of her sordid side....

No not at Izzy. If you have read Izzy's blog you may remember that Matty had a severe allergic reaction after being licked by dogs 2 weeks ago at my uncle's funeral. As soon as it happened my mother told me she was sending my dad to go to the pharmacy to pick up benadryl. My dad is forgetful sometimes and will frequently show a lack of urgency especially when he needs to. So I decided I would go with him. I asked if he had gotten directions when we got to the car. He replied, "there were to many lefts, but I know exactly where to go." My thoughts at the time were my aunt probably gave him the shortest direction, but he either confused the directions or didn't hear them completely , he does need hearing aids. Since he claimed he knew where to go I didn't want to push it.

After driving down the road about 5 minutes my dad started a conversation about his work, which at the time starting to fear things such as anaphylatic shock I didn't really want to talk. I politely told him I wasn't up for conversation and my mind was elsewhere. After driving for 10 min I started to get really scared, what was happening to Matty and why was it taking so long to get to the pharmacy. I asked my dad once again if he really knew where he was going. He said that he had seen a pharmacy earlier in the day. I was wanting to scream in frustration and I felt helpless that I couldn't do anything. I really hate feeling that way and it made me angry. It didn't help that he was driving as if it was a day in the park, i.e. 5 mph under the speedlimit and would slow really slowly for stop lights even before they turned yellow. I was ready to explode...

It took a total of 15 minutes to get to the pharmacy he had seen earlier. The pharmacy was new and would not be opening for another week. I was livid at this point. We drove down the road and found another pharmacy. At this point I was so wired I grilled the pharmacist about what was needed and what dosage etc. I did warn in advance by telling her it was a emergency and she was very helpful.

On the drive back to my aunt's which took 20 mins, yes that's right folks a 40 min round trip. I did not speak to my dad, I was too busy imagining Matty at the hosptial or something else. When we got back Matty seemed better, his face was a little puffy but no more welts. I gave him the Benadryl. After that I went to go talk to my aunt and found out she had told my dad to take the left at the end of her street, then take the next left and the pharmacy was right there. It would have been a 5 min drive and 10 minutes round trip.

I was so angry. I did not yell at my dad or start accusing him of anything no matter how much I wanted to. But I have let him know I am angry. I thought I was slowly getting over it, but yesterday my parents called and the anger showed right back up. It is going to take me some time before I get over it, and a lot longer before I trust him. Next time I will get the directions, and drive as well.

Its amazing how fast Children grow and learn. Matthew has started showing new "tricks" almost daily. He loves to laugh and will change the situation he is in to produce laughter. His new favorite activity is running and tackle your leg (he is trying to scare you, I think he got it from watching some animal show). If you scream or cry like you are scared he will giggle run around laughing and then attack you again.

Of course, some people don't learn there lesson. Izzy frequently forgets or doesn't scream like she is scared. So Matthew has learned to improvise and get the reaction he wants. He bites her, and once she screams runs away luaghing like a little gremlin. The last time he did it he tackle her from behind and bit her on the butt, which caused her to jump a foot in the air screaming. Needless to say, both Matthew and I were laughing at that one.

Its funny, it seems like every time we go somewhere (not home) he does a lot of new stuff. We went swimming and he pushed off from me and tried swimming alone. He actually did really good. He of course wears a floating vest but up until that moment had to always hold onto something (rope, me, etc.). He also got really talkative, and in some cases it seemed like he was trying to actually hold a conversation (simple of course but a step). One morning he kept saying "want that" to which I replied, "want what?" He then said "Ball" and pointed at a ball on the floor.

Overall, it was a great trip but very tiring...

Toddler Shoe Size Denial

About 2 months ago, when my son was 14 months old, my wife went through the round of updating our son's shoes to the correct size. She of course bought him some play sandals, nice leather sandals, and some tennis shoes; all in size 5W. The play sandals and tennis shoes she was able to get on sale for about 5 dollars.

For the past 3 weeks I have been noticing that his shoes have been a little tight. I pointed it out to her, but been the thrifty person, she said "I just bought him shoes, and they can last a little longer." Until today that is. I was putting the leather dress sandals on him, and they would not even go on. His foot was so wide the shoe would not go on his foot. The wife of course assumed I was doing something wrong and had to try. Well, that led to picking up some shoes today while we were out for dinner to belatedly celebrate my birthday.

The first store, he did not like the sales woman and he started crying. The woman actually walked 20 feet away exclaiming "I am not going to eat you". I somehow think she routinely has this reaction with children. The second store, he liked the sales girl, we found out later she teaches very young children gymnastics. Kids can definitely sense whether people like kids. When he finally had his feet sized he was a 6.5W. 3 half sizes larger. Oh boy, was mommy not happy.

Morals of the story. 1) Don't be in denial about shoe sizes. Make sure your child is wearing appropriately sized shoes. You don't have to have a bazillion shoes, just at least one pair that he can wear. 2) Yes sometimes dad's notice these things first. 3) Having a sales person that actually likes kids working in the kids shoes makes a world of difference.

I spent time today going through the kitchen and adjusting the child safety devices that had moved over time allowing Matthew to open drawers and cabinents at his leisure. As soon as I was done, he of course had to try out one particular cabinent that is his favorite. It contains pots and pans and he loves to drag them out. As soon as he found he could no longer open it, he closed the door slightly and pressed the lever to deactivate the device and opened the door with a huge grin and smile for daddy.

There are days I am not sure if I should laugh or cry. He is a smart boy, and he is figuring out stuff faster than Izzy or I can keep up with him. Fortunately, the ultra critical cabinents with chemicals in them use a different device that he can't open yet.
