I was recommended to start with vegetables first, cos some babies won't try them after the sweet taste of fruit.

With my first I had more time so it was mostly home made and now with my second I'm lapsing into one jar a day and home made for the other meals! The jars/cans annoy me tho - because I have a daughter with asthma/eczema (and family history on both sides) I read up on what to introduce and when, and you wouldnt believe how much sneaks into the shop bought stuff labelled 4 months or 6 months which shouldnt be eaten until later! I was scrupulous with DD1 but with DD2 her favourite is apple & orange already and she's not supposed to be on orange yet - oops! When she's older I'll be pureeing family meals - cant be bothered to do separate meals - but at the moment it's one taste at a time so home-pureeing loads of apples, root veg and shortly lentils is the easiest thing. Good icecube trays are a must - I just had a cheap one shatter - ouch!

Absolutely start with veges first. Fruit is sweeter than veges and if they get a taste for something sweet they have trouble having veges etc after that. I started my daughter with pureed potato first then after she got used to that I added pumpkin to it then was giving her different veges as she got used to the different tastes. One thing with tinned/jar food is that you can't start them off with just one thing at a time meaning if bub had a reaction to something you wouldn't know straight away what it was. I bought a jar of veges once for my daughter, it smelled bad and my daughter wouldn't eat it. I bought the apples in a jar a few times, if we were travelling, she liked those. I also bought the soy vanilla custard in a jar and she loved it. When starting off it's best to give her home-made stuff so you know exactly what's going in it and start with one taste at a time. It's also best to make it using water and without adding milk to it. Babies are used to blander foods, they have only had milk up until solids are starting, so they don't need it to have any extras through it like seasonings, milk, butter, etc. Good luck and have fun with solids!

When they get older (6 months) it is SO SO SO much easier just to serve dinner out and make up a bowl for them and throw it in the processor. Then I would half it and refridgerate half for lunch the next day. They both had weetbix for breakfast. It is a lot easier and so much cheaper than buying jar food.

i did the jar stuff from about 6 months till 10months and then went to him having dinner with us. Just taking his food out of the pan before adding any spice or hot sauces. I'm sure its better to eat your own pureed food but who has time for that at lunch and dinner!
