WOW, im touched by the amount of advice i have been given its great! Thank you all. hubby and i have read all of your ideas and we have decided we will leave her in her cot til she starts to climb out or we have another baby which ever comes first!

Hi, my oldest went into his "big boy bed' at about 14 months. He loved climbing into the bed & we had another on the way so we thought "why not?". We bought a bed rail so he wouldn't fall out & found it to be great as we could fold it down & take it with us if we were going away & didn't have to worry whether there was going to be spare cushions etc to put beside his bed. He also kicks his blankets off, we just go in when we are going to bed & cover him up. He no longer uses the bedrail (hasn't needed on from about 17 months) but we have it for his little brother now!

Hi there! I put he matress on the floor for the first six months and now they in normal bed with cot mattress besides the bed. No different to anyone else. But both my kids where in the a bed by 8 months old (mattress on the floor) and noral be by 2 years old. All kids are different and you can only tell if your child is ready just need to try it and see how you go

When my children 1st went into a bed I would put pillows( another good thing is big stuffed toys as I have them on the bed during the day they were stored like this at night and out of the way) under the side of the matress just to roll the side up a little higher on the side where they could fall out as the other side was against the wall I did not have to worry about the other side.

Heres what happened with my boys.

Jaidan went into a bed when he was 2 1/4 but he never scaled the sides. He tried to once when he was about 2 and fell on his head and never tried again.

Chase went into a bed when he was 13 months because he jumped over. Some kids try it others dont.

I would leave your little babe in a cot till she tries to jump out. Then move her. I had no issues with them moving into beds. I just put up a side, told them it was their new bed, and that was the end of it.

Well except the new found freedom of getting out of the bed... but after a week of my putting them back again and again and again (by this stage I wished they were still in a cot!) they got the idea that they weren't allowed out.

Hi there natelz1,

I had the some question a few months back. Here' s what i did!

1.I put a single bed in my sons room along with his cot. ( if the room is big enough of course) he would still sleep in his cot at 1st, then he slowly put himself into the "BIG BOY BED" as we called it. Then i moved the cot out of the room and into the shed. He helped pack it away with me. (he thought he was so good)

2. to solve the falling out of the bed bit. I have put the cot mattress under his single bed and when he is asleep i pull it out, so if he does fall of his bed he cant hurt himself. believe me he has fallin out plenty of times, but hardly ever wakes up. We tryd one of those bed guards that sit under the mattress, but he never liked it. He would always scream and throw it off. The guard didnt work for us but mayb it will for you.

hi there. I have only recently put my 21 month old into her own bed because she was climbing out of her cot and although she sometimes wakes at 3ish in the morning and hops into bed with us, she loves her new big bed. The only reason i put her in a bed was because she was climbing out. If your child isnt doing that yet then lap up the cot while you can. When my daughter started to not want to go to sleep in her in her cot i would leave her for a couple of minutes then return and soothe her. I would sometimes stand near her bedroom door so she could still se me but i would make her stay in her cot, and she would generally go to sleep within 10 minutes.

Although i might sound like a mean mummy, the one thing i would not do was give in because at that age i have come to realise that they are heading towards the "terrible twos" and are starting to see whose boss! Good luck with whatever u decide to do!

hmmm the answers are mixed, I reckon when you are ready to put up with the her wandering out, time after time after time after time after time after time after time.....after.....

or...

you might be lucky, but as she is showing interest in being in a bed, there is no harm in seeing if she'd like to have her afternoon sleep in a bed. If she likes that then talk to her about sleeping in a bed all the time and getting rid of the cot. She is old enough,. She will understand.

dont do it half and half though. It's one or the other. Yes it is good for the times she doesn't want to sleep in the afternoons, but you will have to go through it at some stage.

I can't tell you when but I thought the mattress on the floor was a great idea. But also they have rail things that go on the sides of the bed and at most toy stores they have novelty princess or nemo ones. I have never used them but thought they looked like a fantastic idea. They are similar to the rails on the bunkbeds.

I think it's time to put her in a bed. I know you're scared that she'll fall out, but I just put the mattress out of the cot beside the bed, so if they do fall out it's a soft landing.

The longer you leave it the harder it will be. The bed will be a novelty at first, but it won't take long before she stays in there all night. Good luck! :)

I agree with Sienna (hope I spelt that right). Though I would add, that if you are finding it handy that she is still in her cot and she is not yet fighting to get out of it, you may be best off to leave well enough alone (if it aint broke etc).

A friend of mine put her 18 month old into their spare double bed because she was pregnant and he could get in and out on his own, which saved her aching back. I my self plan to use the cot until I no longer can for what ever reason comes first. Our daughter is 16 (nearly 17) months old. We have a single bed in one of the spare rooms good to go, but I'm in no hurry to have to keep returning a toddler to bed because she's getting out for the simple reason of "because she can"LOL.

Take the easy road as much as possible because one day you might find yourself on a one way hard road with no detours.

Nat, I think you should do what you think is best. My daughter Jordan hated the confinement of the cot and was in a bed at 11 months. I just placed a mattress under the side of the bed so that if she did roll off she went onto that. I know one of my nieces has just moved into a bed and she is 2 and a half. Do you have a bed in her room so she can try it out?
