Agreed that a pediatrician is the best one to deal with childhood issues but a GP can refer to a speech therapist and also the pediatrician. And since a referral is necessary, they must see the GP first.

My son Jodan was like this. After getting the all clear with his hearing we were advised to take him to a speech therapist. I don't know, maybe we just got a bad one but it wasn't sucessful at all. Maybe still worth a shot tho. We didn't notice any speech changes until he began going to childcare. I reckon within a month, he was talking much more and appeared to understand everything that was said to him. Something to think about even if you don't really need childcare for yourself, look into it for your child. I would be definately getting his hearing checked first up tho.

Hope this helps, Jo xx

Have you tried maybe read along books. I don't think that is what they are called but they come with a cassette or CD... They could read the story to him as he goes through the book. I don't know if that would help but it might. Also maybe finding some kind of DVD, that shows pictures with the words, Little Einstine DVD's are great for that.

Here in Quebec there was a show many years ago when my hubby was growing up (Sorry it is in French), anyway they repeat a lot of things showing pictures. My son has began to recognize a lot of things from this show, and has picked up a lot of words from it, although I don't let him watch it as often as he would like.

Also with my son I repeat a lot of the things I say over and over again. For example if I am pealing a potato, I will repeat the word potato over and over until he repeats it back. Of course he has to be in the mood for it. Just today I finally got him saying tomato while shopping. Just little things like that. While I am dressing him, I will say I am putting on your t-shirt now! And repeat the word t-shirt until I have finished, and then continue with the pants. Same goes for pouring a drink. I am getting you some juice juice juice. So the next time he wants juice he repeats it...

Repeating things all the time is not fun, but I will say it has stopped a lot of my sons frustration along with the pointing of the finger.

Anyway I hope these little tricks helps...

But this said, it is also important to see someone to see that your child is not delayed too much when it comes to speech development. Speech delays are best caught early.

As far as reading to your child, you don't need to read the words since your child keeps turning the pages. You can make up a story based on the pictures, or you can probably remember whole story from memory. As long as you are talking and using words, your child will learn from you. You can point out to the objects as you name them too.

On occassion where you see that your child is struggling to tell you something, offer up the words he needs to tell you what he wants.

Good luck!

I remember when my brodie was that age he was so shy and wouldnt speak all the time. so i answered for him, so if you do this maybe give him a chance to say what he is saying... Its funny how as mums we can understand them but others cant...

Please if you are worried go and see your clinic sister or doctor as this can be resolved.... I left it to brodie was at school and he done well at kinder but once he got to prep as we call it here in tasmania he struggled as the teacher wasnt that supportive, but we saw that he needed guidance and help to feel comfortable and needed speech thereapy, and it worked wonders... That was when he was 6 now he is 9 and he is a top student at school and speaks so well....

Good luck with your son and hope you get the same results we did with brodie..

The reason I ask that is that if he is having trouble expressing himself, he may either have problems hearing (yours and other people's) words so therefore, he cant copy what your saying to be able to develop a vocabulary. Alternatively, if he does understand everything, he either feels more comfortable not talking much (and maybe that everything is fine) or there is another problem.

I would definitely seek further help from an early childhood clinic and they might refer you to a speech therapist or the like. As I said, everything could be fine and he is just talking late, but there's no harm in checking things out.
