I drove my friends X-Trail for the weekend last time I was in Melbourne, it was ok, nice to drive, good view of the road and all that I used to have a Honda CRV, and size, and space wise - they are very similar. The X-trail has a smarter looking cabin, however, after that, I think the it loses out to the CRV in, comfort and driveability. If you are getting a 2nd had car, I would recommend the CRV over the X-Trail, it is a softer ride, better for on road, whereas the Nissan has a harder suspension, it doesn't corner as well on the road, however is probably a little better off road. There is another similar sized car - I think it might be a Kia or Hyundai, apparently it loses out to both in comfort and driveability, though I think it has great features. You can get a well tricked out CRV 1998 - 2000 for a bargain with all the features, or you could get a newer car with no features for the same price - don't always think that new is best, you lose about 5 grand as soon as you drive out of the lot.

For similar cars that cost a little more, you would be looking at the Subaru Forrester, Subaru Outback, Ford Escape, Ford Territory, Toyota Kluger etc.

Whatever you do, no matter which car you choose, get it fitted with a cargo barrier, budget for the extra $500 that it will cost.

Plenty of space for everyone as well as plenty of room in the back for travelling etc. We got ours converted to run on both petrol and gas which works out good for us considering the price of fuel these days. We get a full tank of gas for $40 and it lasts for ages. I personally couldn't go back to having a small car after owning a 4wd. Good luck on your search.
