My son used to bang his head on things and I would say ouch louder than him,I was the only one who could understand his language and he could unscrew lug nuts off of a vehicle.The doctors would say no two kids are alike,kids have different amount of pain tolerence,boy did I hear all the excuses.I would go home and want to pad all the walls half way up,and sand all the corners of the tables.Please have an MRI done and then go from there.Talk to your pediatrician make her listen.If you have to answer her by saying BLAH BLAH BLABLABLAH say it then when she looks at you funny just explain that you figured thats all she hears out of your mouth because she is not helping.You would be amazed at the way she will listen next time.My son has P.T.C and it took way too long for someone to listen......best of luck Lill

Thank yo8u very much Sarahkate2202 for your advice3! I have thought about this for a while it sometimes means just finding the time since i have so many children! His Day care worker is also looking into a few things for him as well. I hope when he goes to kinder next year also that they may have other or even more avenues that we can try to help him! I am being honest in saying to everyone on minti that i am sure he has mild autism but some of my friends even some family members are negative about it telling me he is fine theire is nothing wrong with him. Take him for a week i tell them then tell me the same answer! lol lol They would bring him back in 1hr at the most! Hugs to you Michelle

Hi Minti friends I just want to say thank you for all the advice given on this q&a. I am going to look into getting Caydn seen by a child phycologist next time i tak ehim to the dr's! It has been such a long hard 3.5 yrs with him! Today actualluy has been a good one with him! YAY This is a rare occurence with him. I am always having to find new things for him to keep he activated lol lol should i say socially active. He likes it when i buy him newpuzzles etc,l... that he can also share with his siblings. I appreciate all advice and friendships here on minti hugs to you all Michelle

Hello, Im not sure where you are located but my advice is to see a child psychologist. Who can administer a number of psychological tests and the results shouldnt take too long for them to analysis, maybe a week or two. Im not sure if you have looked into autistic disorders or not, but there is a disorder called aspergers where a child excels in some areas though is poor in others and has difficulty with social skills. I hope this maybe of some help. Good luck.

Hi there chleinkal Thank you yes i have tried to google everything i can. I think i may go back to his peadiatrician and see what else we can come up with. She has agreed with me the whole time that there is somethi9ng there but we just need to find it we may never find it but if that is the case then so be it i will help him all the way in whichever way i can! Hopefully when he starts kinder next yr they will have other avenues as well that maybe we have not tried or heard of! Hugs to you from me Michelle

Hi Tee thank you very much for your advice! He has had two sets of grommets in due to reccurent ear infections which we thought was holding hids speech back. But even after these grommets were placed in his ears he did and still does not speak properly alot of people do not understand him when he speaks but he has had about 5 sessions of speech therapy and we were teaching/using macaton i think that is how it is spelt! I have been looking ion the net for more info/sheets to print out for macadon but am unable to find it that i can print out! I AM GOING TO MAKE APPOINTMENT FOR HIM TO SEE HIS PEADIATRICIAN AGAIN maybe now she may see more than when he was not saying/doing much! Hugs to you and thank you again

Caydn has been tested for william's syndrom?? and more that i am unable to remember as ther have been a few all so far came up nil! Thanks for your advice. I think i may try get him to see an occupational therapist. Even his peadiatrician who has seen 2 of my other children agrees their is something there we just need to find it! When he was born it would take 4 hrs just to get 30mls into him most of the time the nurses even had to feed him from the lid off a bottle (the cap that covers the teet) it was pretty funny i will admit i laughed at them cos i thought they were joking. He is just going to be my special boy as all my children are. Caydn does not get treated any different than the others as this i do not believe in it would be unfair if i treated him different to jhis siblings! When he does wrong he gets the same punishment as the otrhers! I love all my children equally but he has a special spot in my heart! I knew before i even had him that he was a special child and one i was meant to have no matter what is or isn't found with him! I am seriously thinking i may ring and take him back to peadiatrician and see what she knows about more results or tests as i struggle daily thinking about it but i tell no-one only my minti friends i speak out alouud to as i know you all listen! I would like to say thank you all for listening and helping me with different advice on this hard situation! Hugs for you all

Thank you wolonfab i live in Cranbourne vic! I have asked my family day care worker to ask her worker that visits her house often to get me some info as i have spoken to a parent at my other sons kinder who has a child that has mild autism and she has said the same take him to see a occupational therapist this is where i may find help! Caydn has had grommets in as he had reccurrent ear infections buit this did not help his speech as we thought it may! He was a late walker and in some things is approx 6mnths behind but in other things he is advanced for his age! He is clever in alot of ways! In my heart i admit there is something there if you look at my pics in my profile you will notice him he is the one with the blonde hair. He has a protruding tongue and sometimes it just hangs out of his mouth which lookds cute yes but sometimes opeople think he is sticking his tongue out at them! He also gets evcery cold flu etc... that is going around! He is also an asthmatic! He has been to a peadiatrician that is how we got onto genetics for most of his tests! People tell me that he is normal but i know after so many children he is not. he is very different to all the others! His forehead protrudes a bit so we do not ever cut his hair too short as it becomes more noticable! I will add a pic of him for all to see maybe someone can give an idea just looking at his pic! Hi Thank you for your advice my son is 4 in october. He attends family day care and his carer is fantastic both herself and i have both perservered teaching him lots of different things to help him get to where he is at right now! He has seen proffessors in genetics at monash hospital in Clayton vic as i live in Cranbourne(near dandenong) if any one know where this is! They took pics of him and it was at one of these visits that they notice he has tiny hands,fingers feet and toes he is small structured all over compared to most 3yr olds that is. He is blonde and most of my children are dark haoired. But hey he is cute i will admit! He is very clever like he knows his colours can count to about 10 enjoys stimulating play will not sit and do nothing for too long! I have people whom tell me he is normal me as a mother of 10 know and can see myself that he is not "normal" so to speak. I know some of you may think i am just paranoid but hey i am not sorry! I am a mother looking for answers as i admit he has a problem and am trying to do the best i can for him and his future! Yes he may be smart in ways which i can see but other ways he is not! I have asked my family day care worker to get her field worker to look into physiotherapy/occupational therapy to see how else we can help him! Thank you all for advice i am looking into things to help him everyday i will not stop until i get answers and the help he deserves! hugs to you all

an iq test on a 4 year old would be different every day, and not necessarily go up, it would probably fluctuate!

i understand your concern, but the thing that i would be most concerned about is his spacial awareness.... if he keeps bumping into things then maybe he can't judge distance???

as for nursery, i think that this will help greatly. my daughter's speech and communication came on leaps and bounds from her entry to pre school in january, now i just need to find somewhere that can fit her with a mute button!!!

as for the test results, i can only say keep pushing the hospital and drs, if they don't like being nagged for results then they need to get their finger out and sort it!!!!

i hope that you get the answers that you are looking for and that those drs get a move on with their tests!!

hi ,,, you can go to your local child care clinic in your part of town they also can refere you to an occupational therapist ,, they can do a number of moter skill tests and alot of other things there also and they can help your son if hes delayed for his age ... they also can get other information that you are looking for ,, sorry thats all i can think of and the places that i have been for help for my twin boys ,,, all the best i know how frustraiting things are when you know in your heart that things just dont seem the norm to you ,,, xxxxx Debbie

to get a whippsi IQ test u need to go to a pyschologist..... but to be honest this wouldn't be my first point of call...I would be seeing a paediatriciian and having head scans etc

My son had the test at $500aus cost and they said he was below average which we now know is not true.....My son is autistic(aspergers) and has just been diagnosed with dyslexia ..But is very clever with maths etc...he is off to a special centre at parra that does neurofeedback, and other tests for disorders like the whippsi

these tests are not always accurate...with jay as he cant read cause of the dyslexia (and also with high IQ) he didn't do the test correctly..... one questions asked him whats a shoe? and he didn't understand what the woman was saying...its a 2 hr test and he got bored.......my son is considered dev delayed and we are still trying to catch him up with motor skills......Jay stopped talking at 14 mths and didn't talk again till he was 4.5....

he now has an aide at school but his behaviour is violent( on suicide watch since yr start) ..... and he is always in trouble ...i was going to keep him back from school as advised when i did the IQ test and yet the school said he wouldnt find it any easier the next yr.......

if you want any help...let me know...I have been there so i can offer support...where abouts r u as well? i may know what pyschologist is near you

Not sure what sort of tests he was had but has he seen an occupational therapist for a behvaiour assesment. My son had one last year and was found to have a sort of badly functioning vestibular system. My son didn't even have to be there for the test it was just a series of questions I answered about his behaviour. Maybe this is something to look at.

Hello, It is so tricky when we look at children development and possibly identifying childrens additional needs.I am a qualified early childhood educator and it is so wonderful to hear of a mum who recognises their child may have some additional needs.Im not sure where you live but in most areas there are services for support and assement.Bearing this in mind sometimes the public waiting lists may be long.Do they attend childcare -and how old is your child? Maybe tthe local childcare centre can recommend services and will write a report on areas that are strengths and concerns.My feeling is though if it dosent feel right then you need to persue help until you get someone to listen-you are after all your childs biggest avocate.Its very frustrating I know-Good luck best wishes Naomi

Hi Michelle, Hang in there - I know how you feel. The lack of response to pain may be related to his left/right hemisphere interaction. When my son was in preschool they were all concerned because he hurt himself a lot and never cried. We gave up on answers until school when they forced the issue - so tread carefully there. Do not allow anyone to intimidate you into medicating unless there is NO OTHER WAY. As to measuring his IQ - this is so out of date. The book 'Son Rising' by Barry Kauffman is about his autistic son who had his IQ measured at age and it was 45. They tried alternative ways with their son and managed to completely retrieve him and he graduated form University with Honours. He now works with at The Options Institute north of NY, USA. I cried all the way through that book because I travelled that path. My friend was like you with a son similar too but she persisted with sport and I taught him positive management of his thinking - he toped the HSC in maths and is a great young man. What can help these children are cross crawling exercises of any and all sorts not to mention exercises that create puffing, which increases lung growth. Sport, sport and more sport that crosses the body - left right left. We did a lot of that and his lungs inceased by 300%. Another 'strange' one I have found works with resynchronising is placing an X in front of them or crossing your arms in an X shape. Sounds odd but it is working for kids and adults here. It follows on the work of Dr Hawkins, which talks about desyncronising when a person is 'sensitive'. Take heart - I have seen the toughest challenges grow into great people and the least challenged end up in gaol. He has you - he is lucky so breathe deeply and cross your arms in front of him. Hi there, I dont have any info for you, but reading this rings bells for me!!!!!! My first child my placenta had stoped working 8 weeks prior to me having a c section. Not only that but both hospitals mixed up dates so i had no funtional placenta and a c section prob pre formed 4-6 weeks to early. I have thought my child was behind compared to other children and have all the works done. Hearing, sight, blood, IQ ,speech, ect.All test came back normal. She has turned three yest and her development has improved a hell of alot in the last 6 weeks.She was always smarter in other things rather than her language skills ect. But it has now what i can say even out. I would personally go to the gp and get refer letter and go and see a specialist. Or you can ring your nearest childrens hospital and get them to give you a list of specialist that you can see.
