When my son grizzles for something and I know he is capable of saying the word I just tell him I do not understand him.. He is also two years old.. If he does not tell me what he wants he does not get it.. He can grizzle all he likes but he still won't get it... When I ask him if he wants something and he points to it I say for example do you want the banana? And if he points and nods his head, I think ask him what is it that he wants. And if he says banana he gets it.. I make him know that I don't understand him when he grizzles or just points.... Of course if I know he is not up to date with a word for something I just repeat the word over and over, eventually he will get it for the next time....

Good luck...

If he knows the words as you say he is capable of saying them, then I wouldn't be giving in to the grizzling. Don't give him what he wants til he says the word, or at least attempts it.

Try encouraging him to talk more when he is in a good mood and has more patience. If he has been grizzling for a while - he is less likely to be open to learning new things. Also, try teaching him basic sign language for the animals around, eating, milk, drink and all that - he might enjoy signing to you instead. Always say the word and sign at the same time (if you don't know the signs, make them up - they are pretty much as you would imagine them to be). Once he can see how delighted you are, and how effective this communication is, he might start talking more. Say each word as you sign it - when he signs it, make a huge fuss - once he can say the word, he will stop signing it - keep making a huge fuss and he should start to come around.

Jay can say more, milk, drink, bottle, eat, etc... However he has only started to do that clearly for a few months - he has been signing when he wants these things since about 6mths - makes life easier, and far less grizzling. When he is tired, or sick, he reverts to signing - especially if he has a sore throat or ears... He signs most of the animals we see around, even if he can say them too, and he shows other people how to do it - it's fun.

After a thorough examination I was told just to wait, be patient as his tongue was huge and he had difficulty getting words around his tongue. Now he is grown up, speaking well and wins bets by touching his nose and chin with his tongue. So can my husband - so he got it from his Dad. Another way is to put clear labels on things and repeat the word, pointing to the label. This creates more interest with the added benefit of being ready to read earlier. Mind you my sister didn't say a word until she was 2 and then she decided we were worthy enough to hear her - so full sentences worthy of a professorr came out. Good Luck.

I am also wondering if perhaps grandparents or any other relatives still talk baby talk to him? Perhaps if they do you could encourage them to stop and ask them to talk properly to him - as this could have an effect on your sons speech also!
PErhaps try reading more - buy a couple of shape books, colour books and just books with a picture of items and words and stuff.
Alot of children develop their speech at their own pace - because each child is different! I knew a boy who did not say a word until he was 3 and a half! he would just point to what he wanted!
Hope this has helped
Have a good day
