I would answer every question she poses with a short honest answer and always point out the positve. Like what she does and you do to help!!! Her generation will inherite this mess and need to know what to do so it doesn't look so bleak for Mother Earth! Good for you for raising a child that cares and knows! There's hope yet!

Try get her some DVD's or videos on Toxic Crusader or Captain Planet
Both of these explain a lot of this in simple young peoples terms and are also really cool cartoons lol

Oh yes, of course that is what happens. We recycle, we have a vege garden, we grow fruit, we have other trees too. We have a eucalyptus tree we bought when it was 15cms tall, now it's as tall as I am and she knows that it's because we raised it and watered it and pulled the weeds up if they grew around it so we could protect from them when it was smaller. We read about different animals from all around the world and their habitats. We go to the river and watch the turtles swimming. We don't swim in the river but we do watch the ducks and turtles. We go bush walking and I point out the animals and the trees we see. We've seen lots of kangaroos and lizards, but once we saw a koala in a tree. That's the only time I've ever seen one in the wild so it was exciting for us both!

I just feel that in order to teach her the good things, I have to teach her how to protect it and why we need to protect our world. These include littering and getting involved in Clean Up Australia Day and so on. Now she's watched this movie, or parts thereof, she is asking what Global Warming is and I don't quite know how to explain that to her. Thanks for your response, and I do also have print-outs from the internet.

That is great that you want to teach your daughter about the environment, I always started by teaching my kids the positive sides of the environment like how come tree's are so important, I would plant plants in the garden and tell them about them, and they loved hearing about it and doing something hands on. When we came into drought I taught them why it is so important to recycle water, you could always teach her about recycling bottles and stuff, get her to take the lids off before puting them in the bin, telling her what they use the recycled plastic for.

There are also websites that have free colouring pages all about the environment too. The one thing is to remember that teaching about the environment doesn't always have to be doom and gloom of what a bad state we are in, I would hate to terrify my kids, but instead teach them the benefits of recycling, planting tree's, water conservation and things like that.
