OMG!! Matress on the floor what a great idea! I have been stewing over this but my mum keeps saying wait until at least 2-3 yrs old. Cos my little one flips and flops all over the cot in her sleep and keeps banging in to the sides (REAL hard) and wakes herself up. So i figured a bed would be worse cos then she will just fall off!! But a mattress on the floor is BRILLIANT!

I would say between 15mths and 2yrs, and i always made sure there was stair gate, just in case little on got out in the night, same with me they used to climb into our bed, so of they went into their own. Mind you i had bed in our room for a while, and always woke in morning and ? yes you got it they was beside us lolxxxxshar

Hi! My son was an atrocious sleeper. i held off on a bed, but he kept asking for one and just after his 2nd birthday we got him one. For us that was the end of day sleeps as I could not make him stay in bed. For my daughter - she always hated the cot and wouldn't sleep in it, so from 12 months she went into a mattress on the floor. This also means I can lay down with her while she is going to sleep and it makes things much easier. If she wakes at night she comes and gets me. Best decision ever! So I say whenever your child is ready. Mine both move around a lot - so I started with a mattress on the floor and a barrier on one side. Then R moved into a car bed, which has sides. The bed we have for B (a hand me down) is quite high so I am holding off setting it up until I am sure she is safe.

Hi! We put our oldest in a bed at 15 months. He was really ready & loved beds (he was always climbing onto our bed & laying down & at mum's he slept on a matress) & we had another bub coming in a few months so we thought 'why not' & put him in a single bed. I got a good bedrail that you can actually fold the side down on to make the bed etc - he only used this for a month or so though as he really didn't need it & he only ever got out of bed twice. Our youngest is 12 months and still moves around in his cot a lot - you will find him sleeping up the wrong end or across the cot, the oldest was never like this so we think the youngest will be in a cot longer than he was. It depends on when you think your child is ready.

my went really early at 8m. She got out one night and that was the end on it...If your baby is climbing out, I say it's probably time for a bed. You can always get a bed, and test it out, and if your baby does not like it just yet, then you can put her back in the crib for a little while longer, and you already have the bed....take care hun

Hi there,

I personally have always waited until my children were ready . . . By this I waited until they were sleeping soundly, not rocking or trashing the cot . . For me it was about when the child is ready NOT the parent. . . .

A good guide is climbing out. Once they can climb out, I found it safer to put them on a mattress on the floor and then moved them into the bed about a week later. Went straight to a single bed. Didn't need to use bed rails with any of mine. If they got up and walked out it was straight back into bed. Leisa

With Alex and Charlie when they climbed out of their cot it was straight into a bed. i was too scared about them falling. Charlie was about Aaliyah's age and Alex was 2 (just after charlie was born)

you can get a toddler bed which is low tot he ground or a normal bed just get a rail for her so she doesnt fall out. My kids were good they did fall out and Alex sleeps on a top bunk.

i have found with my boys that they would roll around so much whilst sleeping they would bump themselves on the bars or sides and wake up. Probably about 18 months of age. This is probably early by some standards but it seemed to work for us. If you are worried about them falling out of bed there are sides that you can purchase not too expensive.

My bub would get up and walk off alot atm, but my main concern is that she still turns around alot in her cot - ie., she starts off laying with her head at the top, and feet at the bottom, but when I check on her later, she be sleeping across it with her head facing the right-hand side and feet to the left-side, or with her head at the bottom and feet at the top. If she does this in a bed, I'd worry she'd keep falling out and thus I'm not sure if she's ready.

Our son just transfered a few months ago. He was 22mths. Bit later than some but we didnt have a bed til then and he wasnt really ready. By 22mths he was quite happy to sleep on a matress on the floor (when we went away ect) so we transfered him then. He took to it really well and never looked back. There was no tantrums or other stuff. We had him on a matress on our floor for 3 nights straight before the transfer (he was really sick) so we chose then. Try bub on a matress if you are not sure.
